Google Maps is Back on the iPhone

The wait is over. The official Google Maps application for the iPhone is now available from the Apple App Store.

Apple's dropping of Google Maps for the new Apple Maps has been a PR disaster for the company. However, after a bit of a wait, iPhone owners have actually ended up with a far better product.

The new Google Maps app for the iPhone includes turn-by-turn navigation, as well as providing those important features missing in Apple Maps - Street View and Transit Directions.

Google has also released two useful products for iPhone app developers, a Google Maps SDK for iOS, and a simple URL scheme to help developers build apps that include Google Maps.

Great news - downloaded & it's wonderful to have back. Any news on an iPad app?

From the New York Times review of the new Google Maps iPhone app it does sound like an iPad app is on the way,

"Finally, although Google Maps runs fine on the iPad, it’s just a blown-up version of the iPhone version. There’s not yet an iPad-specific app. Google says that goodies like those will be coming soon."

As has been picked up on here, the app is not yet native (full screen) on the iPad yet. As an alternative, give my app Many Maps a try, full screen on all iDevices, and giving you Google StreetView, Nokia Here, Bing Maps and OpenTouchMap - iTunes URL: http://is.gd/ManyMaps
