Premature Death Rates on Google Maps

A Google Map from Public Health England is generating a lot of news interest in the UK today. The Longer Lives map highlights premature mortality across every local authority in England.

The map allows the user to view a heatmap of overall premature deaths and heatmaps for premature deaths which are caused by cancer, heart disease & strokes, lung disease and liver disease. It is also possible to view a heat map of socio-economic deprivation across every local authority. The socio-economic deprivation heat map proves that there is a close correlation between areas of high deprivation and premature death rates.

The map itself is interesting in that all the Google base map layers have been removed from the map and only the English local authority polygons are displayed on the map.
